This session focuses on the development of an approach to teach multimodal literacy in secondary school students. In light of the demands in the contemporary digital communication environment, education systems all over the world are increasingly recognising the importance of developing multimodal literacy in students – to view multimodal texts critically, and to create multimodal representations effectively. The challenge for educators is how to design meaningful learning experiences to equip students with knowing ‘what to look out for’ in multimodal texts and ‘how to make’ compelling multimodal representations. Dr Victor Lim Fei, of the National Institute of Education, Singapore argues that the theoretical advancements made in the field of multimodal studies can inform classroom instruction. He will share his experience in developing an approach, based on Systemic Functional Multimodal Discourse Analysis and Learning by Designs Framework, to teach multimodal literacy to secondary school students in Singapore. The discussion will highlight the assumptions, issues, and implications in the journey of translating theory into practice.
